Mud


Mud is a mixture of soil and or silt or clay, that, when mixed together with water, becomes a thick liquid. Creepy crawly things like to make muddy places their home.

Some of these little creatures, like snails, frogs and worms, thrive in the warm, moist and thick mud. Muddy water also provides other larger creatures, such as elephants and pigs, with the ideal place to take a bath. This cools the animals down and helps provide them with protection from the sun.

However mud can also be dangerous, two examples of this are, firstly, when mud roads are subject to too much rainfall or, secondly, when the formation of mud volcanos takes place. Both situations can be hazourdous.

Mekarsari Reflection



On Friday April 27, 2007 grade three was meant to go on a field trip, but what we went on was not a field trip at all. What we went on was an amazing, absolutely terrific and unique adventure. Where to start? Well, the beginning is a good place I guess.

After arriving at school we got ourselves organized and onto the bus. I think that secretly, we all must have known what lay ahead as everyone was in high spirits and a feeling of excitement filled the bus. When we arrived at Mekarsari, we were asked to change into our older clothes that we had prepared and packed the previous evening.(The night before when I was getting organized for the trip,my mother asked me why I needed extra clothing,if she only knew what was about to take place she wouldn't need to ask).

After making our way into a slippery, slimy, not to mention gooey, pool of mud, the fish were released into into the water to join us. The idea was for us to try and capture the fish with our hands,I didn't catch anything that looked like a fish, just a whole lot of other strange debris.However that did not matter, it was so much fun just trying.Hesky, our classmate, took the top position for the best catch, as he caught four.

The next activity was even better that the previous one, we were on our way to wash a buffalo!(I'm not joking, we really washed a buffalo). It was such an amazing feeling standing so close to such a large animal. It was unlike anything that I have ever done in my life before. The buffalo were actually tame and looked quite harmless, nonetheless, I kept my distance.

Now this is where the most interesting part of my recount comes in, we were on our way to plant rice. This was a real eye opener for me because I know rice as being something that we buy from the supermarket already packed up and ready to cook. It was interesting to learn the beginning part of the process. It will make me appreciate rice more that I did before, of that I'm certain.

Now let me get right to the best part of the day, after planting rice, our teacher, Mrs Jane,did something so out of the ordinary for an adult, let alone a teacher! Mrs Jane started a mud fight! My mother didn't believe me when I told her, at least untill she saw the evidence posted on Mrs Jane's blog! It was just so amazing! Who would have thought that we were not only allowed to get mud coated, but that our teacher,Mrs Jane, would actually join us! I have never done anything like that before, my mother is always telling me not to get dirty!Oh, what fun!

After the 'mud bath', it was time for a real bath (which was no match for bathing in the mud) Our next stop was to paint a 'caping' hat. We were allowed to use our creativity and paint a decorative design on our hats. My caping will always remind me of our adventurous day at Mekarsari, so I have given it a special position in my bedroom so I can see it every day and be reminded of our fabulous outing.

Our next stop after our painting activity was a short train ride that took us on a tour of the grounds at Mekarsari. It was a perfect way to wrap up a totally unique day. Mrs Jane, let's do it again!

Mud Fight!


I came home and told my mother all about our field trip, it took hours! In the begining however, she didn't believe me when I started explaining about the MUD FIGHT. Do you know what she said?" What?, you can't be serious, Mrs Jane would never let you do that, it must have happened whilst Mrs Jane wasn't watching". I laughed and said "mum, Mrs Jane joined in"!

I don't think that my mother was convinced about the last part, that Mrs Jane joined in, because her jaw dropped open when I told her and her eyebrows crinkled up into a funny shape.

I continued explaining about the best field trip that I have ever been on, but I could see by the look on my mother's face that she was still not sure about Mrs Jane's involvement in the slinging of mud.

Then, about twenty minutes passes by, and I happened to log onto Mrs Jane's blog. There it was, my evidence, my friends were 'mud coated' staring back at me from the screen! This was my big moment, the one where I got to prove myself.

I called my mum, she came, and guess what happened then? Her mouth dropped open again, but this time a big scream came out. Thanks Mrs Jane for your perfect timing uploading those pictures! Let's do it again!

GGM'S 4TH MARKET DAY...




Today Grade three hosted our fourth 'Market Day'. We had many products, but our newest and most interesting products, were the 'Phoenix Egg' and a 'Harry Potter Crystal' I felt it was a successful day, as our sales went well. We will continue selling tomorrow, so hopefully tomorrow will be a great success also. Market Day is a great opportunity for us, the grade three students, to practise our sales tequnique. After todays sales, we have made a profit of RP 4,120,350. With each new Market Day we seem to improve and understand more and more about actually buying and selling. I look forward to doing my best tomorrow to help my fellow classmates have another great and profitable day.

This is a Venn diagram of our 'wants' and 'needs'. It
shows what we want and what we need. It was very interesting preparing this diagram and it helped us realize and understand the difference between what is necessary in out lives,(needs) and what we want (desires). Because of this area of inquiry, we are becoming more aware of our wants and needs. It is part of our terrific UOI 'I want I need', we composed it in a network called Kid Pix.

Learning from my friends blogs


I have posted comments on five of my classmates blogs (and my teacher's). After reading each blog, I have learnt the following things from each person's blog.
1. Mrs Jane: Of course Mrs Jane has the best blog because Mrs Jane is our teacher and Mrs Jane understands many things that we, as students, don't yet understand. But thanks to Mrs Jane we are learning! Whilst reading Mrs Jane's blog, I have learnt that having a variety of different things on our blog will make it more interesting. For example, Mrs Jane has information about her family, Masters degree and studies, information for us in grade three and some fun things too, like the virtual pet and Tinkerbell. Adding to these things, Mrs Jane also has poems,upcoming events and an Avatar. I also like the fact that Mrs Jane sometimes posts students inquiries on her blog, such as Aditya's inquiryrecently. This way we all learn, firstly from Aditya's question and secondly from Mrs Jane's answer. From Mrs Jane's blog I have learnt many things.
2. Kathleen: Something that I have learnt from Kathleen's blog, is that it's good to let fellow classmates know about the things that are special to you. Kathleen has showed us that she is very creative and likes painting, and has mentioned many times that she loves to take part in activities where she can show her creative abilities. I think this is a wonderful idea, this way we can learn more about one another and the things that are meaningful to each of us. Kathleen is very creative, so from Kathleen's blog I have learnt something about creativity.
3. Aditya: What I have learnt after reading Aditya's blog is that it is always important to choose graphics that relate to the subject that you are working on. Aditya has chosen his graphics wisely, as most of them relate to what he is writing about and therefore help add to the explanation of the assignment. So from Aditya I have learnt that making graphics relative to what you are writing about is very important.
4. Arvid: What I learnt from viewing Arvid's blog was that a blog can be mixed with personal family pictures, such as Arvid's is, as well as our class assignments. I really liked reading through Arvid's posts because they showed me that he is very proud of his family, and that is so important. A blog can be made more personal by adding these sorts of things.
So from Arvid I have learnt that I can make my blog more personal with these kind of special touches.
5. Kalista: By reading Kalista's blog, I have learnt that over the school break, Kalista regularly updated her blog, which is really wonderful because we, her classmates, were able o read about her daily activities. I think that regularly adding to our blogs is a great idea, especially if you were also home for the holidays, like I was. So from Kalista I have learnt that updating my blog often, it keeps it interesting.
6. Kim: I really enjoy Kim's blog because it is constantly changing! It is interesting and bright. When I log on to Kim's blog I am always met with a surprise. I think change is a good thing as long as it brings positive results with, it and Kim's blog keeps on improving and getting better each time. So from Kims blog I have learnt that, used in the right way, change can also be refreshing.

Words for dinner

We have a competition happening in grade three,
It's a wonderful challenge to speak English properly.
I'm eager to try, to do my very best,
to search out words, but it's quite a test.
My mother, she attaches words to the wall
it doesn't matter to her, big or small.
She sticks them on and encourages me to read,
then to learn them and in my memory heed
Then she invites me to use these words in my quest,
the one where I'm trying to speak English the best.
Hooray! I think, how easy this will be,
just to use the words that she's provided for me.
But wait ..... it's not as simple as that,
she takes my hand and at the table I'm sat.
In front of my eyes arrives a book so thick,
I glance at it's title and start to feel sick.
Within this book that starts with 'D',
the meanings I must find from A - Z.
I complain and say "It's just not fair,
this will take all night, don't you care?"
After what seems like ages, I'm given a drink.
But I can't relax, all I can do is think.
I decide instead to get something to eat,
so off I go, back to my seat.
What's for dinner? I can't wait to see,
but when I look down at my plate, only words stare back at me.
I love this competition, it's helping me to improve,
but when will these words cease to be my food?
I say to my mother " that's enough for today",
she answers and says "rest you may".
I crawl into bed, all snug and tight,
But these words in my head don't know it's night.
They float around in my head, depriving me of sleep,
until into slumber, I finally seep.
Everything is wonderful, no more is said,
I'm finally free from those words in my head.

The Kilo

Kilo: The meaning of Kilo actually means units of 1000, in this case 1000 meters which translates, or is = to, 1 kilometer. Kilo, if put before the form of measurement, means 1000 units of. Often when we buy food or fruit from the supermarket, it will be weighed for us and we will pay for it by it's weight. If we by 1 kilogram of apples, this translates to 1000 grams, or, 1kilogram. So whether using meters, grams or any other form of measurements, the word kilo stands for 1000 units.

The metre, It's definition and how it was invented
The metre is a measure of length. It is the basic unit of length in the metric system, and in the International System of Units, which abbreviated is (SI). There are seven different entries in the SI, the metre has the top position on the list, as the metric system actually got it's name from the metre.

The metre was defined by the French Academy of Sciences as, (this is where it gets technical), 1/10,000,000 of the distance from the North Pole to the Equator - (the imaginary circle around the centre of the earth), passing through Paris. Now it is defined by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures, as the distance travelled by light in absolute vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second,. The symbol for metre is m. We however, mostly know the metre as being 100cm. This definition has been recognised since 1983.
Please note that I have done the best that I can to put this into my own words, although it is quite difficult because of the technical part of the definition. This is about as simple as I can make it without taking out important information.

My parents 'wants' for me, now, and in the future.


My parents 'wants' and hopes for me...

1.
The number one 'want' that my parents, have for me now, would have to be to love our Lord Jesus with all of my heart, mind, strength and my soul. My parents believe that this is the essence of life.
The number one 'want' that my parents have for me in the future, is to continue to love our Lord Jesus with all of my heart, mind, strength and my soul, and then add to that love everyday. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life, and my parents believe that there is no other more important ingredient for a joyful , happy, healthy and prosperous life, than this.
2.
The number two 'want' that my parents have for me now, is that I love my neighbour as I love myself, and that I treat others in the same manner that I, myself, would like to be treated. This is also the second most important commandment that Jesus Christ has set before all mankind, and ,hence it has become the second 'want' that my parents have for me now.
As you can probably guess, the number two 'want' that my parents have for me in the future, does not differ from the above want that they have for me now. I must try to accomplish this request that Jesus Christ asks of me now and always.
3.
The third 'want' that my parents have for me now, is that I should focus in my schooling. My mother and father believe that I should be on a 'quest' to become educated and knowledgeable. According to my parents, this is a very important ingredient to having a successful life. They do remind me of this almost everyday, so I am not likely to forget!
The second 'want' that my parents have for me in the future, is that I continue in my quest for educational success and fulfillment, that I can become an educated adult and be in a position to help others using the knowledge that I have obtained.
4.
The fourth 'want' that my parents have for me now, is that I can continue to be a wonderful daughter and sister, (I do try my best). My parents said that they do not want me to change, that they want me to keep remembering how important that loving and respecting my family is to enjoying, and having, a happy life.
The fourth 'want' that my parents have for me for the future is that I can grow up keeping my values, remembering that Jesus is the light of my life, and that I should always respect my
family and friends.
5.
The fifth 'want' that my parents have for me now, is that I stay balanced and focused on all of the above listed things. That each and everyday I strive to become a better person and remember that Jesus Christ is the light of my life.
The fifth 'want' that my parents have for me for the future, is that I can put to use all of the points mentioned above and have a joyous and happy life. That I will find a way to possibly lead or help others to come to know Jesus our Lord.

Reflection on eLearning


Reflection On eLearining
We have just ended our UOI 'Say What' and we have started a new subject to focus on. Our new area of inquiry is to do with the topic 'I want, I need'. I am already learning to be more of an inquirer as we currently are doing our homework digitally and we also are using our quality of being reflective, as when we have completed our homework, we can view our friends blog to see what they have done and try use their ideas to set an example for us in the future, this area of learning is called using a 'blog'. Before we started this topic, I had no idea what a blog was! This form of digital homework is splendid as it has helped me improve my Internet skills! a few weeks ago I helped my brother, Jordaan, create his own blog too. I have come to learn and realize new things whilst helping him, and I think it is a wonderful idea for the Grade three students to use this method for our homework as it helps all of us improve our Internet skills dramatically!

IBO Learner Profile


THE IBO LEARNER PROFILE

Sekolah Pelita Harapan has goals for us, as students, to aim for and hopefully achieve whilst we are students. It is also the hope of the school and our teachers that we will learn these very important life skills, and that these skills will stay with us through to our adulthood. Learning these ten basic skills will help us become not only better students, but also better people. These skills, when perfected, will then add to the quality of our person.




CARING
I demonstrate my caring quality when I help my friends in their time of need. For example, when my friend and classmate Kim needs to use the internet facility at my house, to do her homework, I invite her to come over. I don't think twice about asking Kim to come to my house because I care about her and I am concerned that she has her homework submitted on time. I don't want Kim to be put in a uncomfortable situation if her assignments are not completed on the requested date and time along with our fellow classmates.

COMMUNICATOR

I demonstrate my communicative qualities when I speak in more than one language. I try very hard to learn the language of the country that I live in, which is Indonesia, because my father is an Indonesian and I want to be able to converse with my father in his language. My father is also able to speak English, but I feel that I must also learn my father's mother tongue as a show of respect for him, and his country. By learning Bahasa Indonesia I am also improving my ability to communicate alot more effectively with the people who live here in Indonesia. Speaking another language helps me to understand the culture of the country also, this way I don't feel like such a foreigner. Without speaking the language I would not be such a good communicator.

INQUIRER

I demonstrate my skills to inquire when I ask my teacher questions in the classroom. I am not always confident when I ask a question, sometimes I am concerned that my question may not be a sensible one, but I go ahead and ask anyway. I know that by being an inquirer, I will learn much more than I would if I didn't ask questions. I know that people do not mind me inquiring because they know that I am trying to further my education.


KNOWLEDGEABLE
I demonstrate that I have knowledge when I answer questions, either in the classroom or in my daily life. Being the eldest of three children, I am often asked questions by my younger brothers. Having the ability to answer their inquiries correctly and helpfully makes me very happy. Going to school and continuing my education, helps me to become more knowledgeable and therefore
more helpful to others.

OPEN-MINDED

I demonstrate my open-minded quality when I respect the ideas and suggestions of others. I know that the world is a very big place, and that not everyone shares the same ideas and opinions that I do. However, I do understand that everyone is entitled to voice their own opinions. For example, I must respect that other students in my classroom may have a different way of saying, or of doing something, that may be different from my way, but I must always remember that their ideas are just as important as mine, and try to learn from their different perspective.

PRINCIPLED

I believe that I demonstrate that I am a principled person when I do not waver from my beliefs. My belief in Jesus Christ and our Heavenly Father is very strong, and therefore I will not change my way of doing things to suit other people if it not what I believe is the right thing to do.I believe that people must be kind, caring, honest and display all of the wonderful qualities that make a good person. I know that I am not perfect, and that I must try to be a good person to set a good example for other people.

RISK TAKER
I demonstrate my ability to take risks when I try new tasks and activities that I have not done before. I am not always sure that I can complete the task well the first time, but I must try my best and be a risk taker so that I can learn. I know that, even if I make mistakes, that I am still learning because we can also learn alot from our mistakes. I have just started to learn kung-fu and I have to try many new things that I am not sure that I can do well the first time, but taking a risk and trying those new things helps me learn. I know that sitting back and watching will not help me become better at something. I must involve myself and try my hardest.

REFLECTIVE
I demonstrate my quality of reflection when I look back over mistakes that I have made in my exams and tests at school. I know that by looking back over my work, and by reflecting on it, that I can learn from my mistakes and try not to make those mistakes again next time. The same thing can also be said if I do something that is good, I can see a positive reaction from my actions and so when I reflect on that situation, I try to remember to do the same next time.


THINKER

I demonstrate my ability to be a thinker when I do my homework each day. I must think carefully before I make a final decision about the information that I put into my homework because we are currently having a competition in grade three about using descriptive and proper English so I try my best to chose my words very carefully. I know that being a thinker is necessary in all areas of our life because good decisions are only made with prior thought. We should not rush into making decisions, but think things out carefully beforehand.


BALANCED

I demonstrate my ability to stay balanced when I pray. I involve myself in many different activities each day and I hear many different ideas from different people, but because I have Jesus in my heart and I spend time everyday praying to Him, this way my spirit stays balanced. God helps me not to get too carried away, too upset or angry, but to stay focused on Him. This is the true way to joy and happiness and I believe the only way to becoming a balanced person too.
